Heirloom Tanjore paintings are resilient, but their 24K gold leaves and organic pigments require careful conservation. Over generations, dust, soot from lamps, and moisture can settle on the surface. Here is how master conservationists advise cleaning these sacred pieces.
Dusting and Dry Cleaning
Never use liquid solutions, alcohol, or soap to clean the gold foil. The traditional gesso underlay (Mukk paste) is soluble in water, and moisture can cause the gold leaves to peel away. Instead:
- Use a dry, camel-hair cosmetic brush to gently brush away surface dust from the crevices.
- Move the brush in light circular motions, avoiding deep scratches on the gold leaf.
Preserving the Organic Pigments
The colors in authentic Tanjore art are derived from natural mineral pigments (vegetable dyes, stones). To prevent fading, keep the painting away from direct sunlight or damp walls. If the glass frame gathers condensation, un-frame it immediately and dry the piece in a humidity-controlled space.
Re-embedding Loose Gems
If the Jaipur stones or glass beads loosen, use a tiny drop of traditional gum or ph-neutral conservator's adhesive. Avoid superglues, as they contain solvents that can dissolve the gold foil or cloud the gems. By following these steps, your Tanjore painting will retain its brilliant sheen for centuries.
