The hallmark of an authentic Tanjore painting is its deep, stone-hard relief work. This isn't just paint—it's alchemy. For centuries, master artisans have used a secret mixture called 'Mukk'.
What is Mukk Paste?
Mukk paste is the traditional gesso relief compound used in Thanjavur art to create three-dimensional structures of crowns, jewelry, temple arches, and columns. Unlike modern synthetic fillers, authentic Mukk paste is created using a precise ratio of purified Arabic gum (sourced from the Acacia tree) and finely powdered French chalk (calcium carbonate).
The Recipe and Synthesis Process
The preparation of Mukk is a meditative, labor-intensive process:
- Gum Purifying: Arabic gum crystals are dissolved in water and filtered through fine cloth to remove bark and impurities.
- Kneading the Chalk: French chalk powder is added to the liquid gum and kneaded continuously for several hours until it reaches a clay-like consistency.
- Resting: The paste is left to mature in a damp cloth to prevent premature drying.

Layer-by-Layer Relief Application
Once the outline of the deity is drawn on the seasoned wooden board, the artisan applies the Mukk paste:
- Base Layer: Applied with a thin wooden spatula to establish flat elevated regions.
- Detailing Layer: Applied using fine brushes or specialized wooden needles to build up crown details (Kireetam), necklaces, and columns.
- Gem Embedding: While the paste is still semi-wet, semi-precious Jaipur stones are pressed into the relief work, allowing the paste to naturalize and lock the gems in place as it cures.
"The gesso relief is the skeleton of the painting. If the Mukk paste is not mixed in the correct proportion, the 24K gold foil applied over it will peel or crack within a decade. The secret is patience and the purity of natural gum." — Master Artisan K. Ramachandran, 4th Generation Tanjore Painter
According to master artisans, modern synthetic alternatives dry too quickly and crack over decades. Traditional Mukk paste, however, cures slowly over 3-4 days, binding with the wood fibers to form a permanent, stone-like bond that lasts for centuries.

"Gold is the skin of God. When we apply it, we are not just decorating; we are manifesting the divine aura into the physical realm."
